[UPDATED] PROJECT OMNI

Thanks to the great dev community for our S2, we have many mainstream custom rom projects like CM, MiUi, AOKP, Carbon, Slim, Liquid Smooth, CyanFox, PA, PACman, X-treme, etc. etc.  A new one (and quite famous apparently!) added support for S2 last month. PROJECT OMNI! The standout feature? "Multi-window". Omni generated quite a buzz as it became the first AOSP based Custom Rom to support Samsung's famous multi-window feature out of the box.

S2 was added when team Omni started development in KitKat and since both the projects (KitKat & Omni) are in their early stages, we'll have to wait for a while before we can show off the famous multi-window feature.

I reviewed the build which was based on buggy 4.4.1 and as a result I wasn't impressed at all with its performance and battery life. But as the team started pushing out 4.4.2 nightlies, all those bugs were squashed and I'm happy to report that battery life has improved considerably compared to the 4.4.1 build which I reviewed. You can further improve your battery life by flashing this kernel. The latest nightlies are stable enough to be used as your daily driver.

Coming to the Rom itself, it's working flawlessly with the New Android Runtime aka ART. Initial impressions are great. The rom is smooth and fast. There are some customization options for changing the basic stuff within the rom and they are really handy. Watch my full video review to learn more about these options.

Coming to the apps and functionality part now, every app I've installed has worked so far with the new Android Runtime aka ART and these include some of the most useful and common apps like AdAway, titanium backup, whatsapp, etc. From the system apps point of view, camera and camcorder are both functional and you can enjoy shooting 720p and 1080p videos at 30 fps with stereo recording. All the usual connectivity options like WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G (HSPA+) are fully functional and I must mention, bluetooth headsets will work too. If you are a regular Google Maps user and always use Navigation on the go, you wouldn't be disappointed either as GPS is fully functional & you'll get a lock within ten seconds.

Lastly, over-the-air aka OTA update feature has always been a deciding factor for many while choosing which custom rom to install. I'm happy to report that Omni Rom comes with Open-Delta Updater. Not only does it save you the hassle of booting into recovery and updating the rom yourself, it also saves you a great deal on data. What this means is, it only downloads the "difference" between the current nightly of Omni Rom you're running & the upate available, resulting in a 10 mb (max) data download most of the times. So you can even update this rom on your slow 2g networks as it won't take much time to download approximately 10 mb of data. Isn't it great?
